Akbar Featured in the Louis Vuitton City Guide!

We’re thrilled to share that Akbar appears in the Louis Vuitton City Guide: Los Angeles, in a profile of our owners David LeBarron and Albert Loya titled “Queer Leaders.”

The guide tells a story many of our regulars know well. David and Albert met at Akbar back in 2007. David was working security, then tending bar, and Albert soon joined him behind it. Before long, Akbar’s founders, Scott Craig and Peter Alexander, asked the pair to take over.

In 2022 they gave Akbar a new lease on life. They refreshed the Moroccan-inspired interiors, kept the classic 1970s stools, and opened the T’art Gallery in the back as a home for queer artists from across the region.

The feature highlights what makes our calendar special: DJ nights alongside showcases of young queer talent, Gaymers nights, Bears in Space, drag from the Pink Pony Club, diva tributes and much more. As David puts it, the idea was always “a bar that isn’t just a bar.”

Akbar is a neighborhood oasis for every generation, from happy hour regulars to dancers closing out the night at 2am. Thank you, Louis Vuitton, for telling our story, and thank you to our community for writing it with us.
